Sarrebourg Moselle Sud is an area full of charm, stretching along the banks of the Sarre and Marne au Rhin canals, at the gateway to Alsace and the Vosges mountains. We invite you to discover its exceptional landscapes, picturesque villages and remarkable historical heritage.
On a 2-day cycling trip, let your 2 wheels carry you along at a gentle pace as you discover the wonders of the region, with its unspoilt nature, culture and local gastronomy.
Day 1 - From dazzle to dazzle
Majestic Sarrebourg!Your journey begins in Sarrebourg, the first stop on the Chagall trail, starting at the Chapelle des Cordeliers. Behold Marc Chagall's majestic stained glass window "La Paix", 12 metres high and dating from the 20th century. One of the most impressive stained glass windows in the region, it is also the largest created by the artist. Then head off to the garden adjoining the chapel, where you can sit in the shade of a tree and listen to the voice of Marc Chagall and his companions with your audio guide.
The tour continues on to the Museum of Pays de Sarrebourg, a superb contemporary space designed by architect Bernard Desmoulin, which will plunge you into the history of the region through its permanent and temporary collections. The tapestry created by Yvette Cauquil-Prince takes its inspiration from the stained glass window "La Paix", and will continue to amaze you. The museum also has a large collection of earthenware and porcelain from the Niderviller factory, as well as archaeological finds from the Sarrebourg region.
After this cultural stopover, if you don't have your own bike, you can hire an electrically-assisted bike from the tourist office, which will be your mount for the next two days, and set off for the Sarrebourg leisure area. On your way is a trail of around twenty contemporary bronze sculptures in the heart of the town. A real open-air museum !
A word of advice: book your electrically-assisted bikes in advance at the Tourist Office to make sure you don't miss out - they're very popular ! To book, call 03 87 03 11 82.
Join your next stop at the leisure area bordering the Etang l'Evêque. Discover the arboretum and follow the Sarre trail, which features educational nature signs in keeping with the theme of this green setting. At the water's edge, take time to contemplate the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Let yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the water! Now leave the city by the banks of the Sarre and the Hoff district. Pedal your way through the countryside along country lanes and woodland paths. At Haut-Clocher, you can see the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa and the former convent of Saint-Ulrich. For lunch, stop off at the Auberge Saint-Ulrich restaurant for a fine gourmet menu featuring local produce.
Get back on your horse for just 5 kilometres and head for the Stock Pond from Langatte leisure complex, one of the largest ponds in eastern France. Take your time to explore the area around the pond, then head north along the Sarre canal to explore the area's exceptional landscapes. You'll come across a breathtaking view of the Stock pond, crossed by the canal, at a place called "Les Trois Ponts" in Langatte.
In the late afternoon, head across the Etang du Stock to Rhodes for the night at Domaine des Bachats. Awarded the "Accueil vélo" label, this organically-farmed livestock farm invites you to reconnect with an authentic way of life. You can sleep in a comfortable family suite in the adjoining gîte, or try a more authentic experience in the old granary on straw beds.
Day 2 - Immerse yourself in the Lorraine countryside
Walk between heritage and natureAfter a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast of local and organic produce, Le domaine des Bachats has plenty to surprise you. Take the time to stroll through the 2-hectare park, or take a dip in the heated swimming pool. You can also explore the animal farm and meet the ewes, donkeys and cows of the Vosges.
For lunch, get back on your bikes and head to the European Nautic restaurant. Here you can enjoy French cuisine in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Stock lake.
Then head for Guermange, where you'll cycle through lush green countryside and small Lorraine villages such as Fribourg and Desseling. In Guermange, approach the church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul and marvel at the remarkable frescoes covering the entire interior walls. Don't hesitate to turn on the sound and light show, which is a wonderful complement to the religious scenes painted by Abbé Abé in the 1920s.
Continue your walk towards the Maison du Clément in Belles-Forêts. This Lorraine house dating from 1750, owned by the Lorraine Regional Nature Park, bears witness to the history of man and rural architecture in its structure and materials. This timber-framed house is now a museum of the architectural heritage of the Pays des Etangs. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement.
Preparing your visit to the Maison du Clément
It's time to turn back towards Sarrebourg, for a 20km cycle ride. Take the banks of the Houillères de la Sarre canal for a gentle ride along the water's edge, then cycle along the cycle paths beside the Langatte and Haut-Clocher country roads.
